The letter Hh
and
Sense of Smell and Taste

Tasting!

Did you know the tongue has sections for tasting different flavors such as salty/sweet on the tip, sour on the sides and bitter at the back?

The children enjoyed a taste testing center where they tasted chips, gummy candy, lemon wedges and cocoa.  Using descriptive language they talked about each different taste and which part of their tongue gave them the information they needed to describe them.

Smelling!

Smelling is directly related to tasting.  If your nose is stuffy, tasting can be really difficult, not to mention smelling.  In spite of some stuffy sniffers last week, the children had a great time with smelling and tasting activities.  During Exploring centers they played a game called "What's That Smell?".  Cotton balls were soaked in liquid extracts and put into numbered vials.  The children took turns sniffing each vial and using descriptive language to talk about what they thought was inside. They then drew a picture of their guess on a page for their Science Journals. The vials held; vanilla, peppermint, vinegar and orange zest.  As the teachers took dictation, we heard descriptions such as " mmm, ice cream!" and "Eww! That's a sour smell. Yuck!".  Some even said, "That's a candy cane!" hitting the scent right on the nose for peppermint.  We have some super sniffers in our Junior Kindergarten class.

Hh is for Hands and Handwriting....Without Tears!

As we learned about our five senses the children had lessons about development and coping if one of the senses aren't present. They learned about braille and reading with touch when the sense of sight isn't present. Using their hands to communicate when speech and the sense of hearing isn't present  is called sign language.  The children are learning to sign their letters and other simple words using their hands.  They also are learning to use their hands to properly grip writing devices  for forming letters and numbers, as well as drawing. We call them claw fingers!  The teachers are working with the children to grip their crayons, pencils, chalk, etc. using their pointer and "tall man" fingers and thumb.  The ring and pinkie fingers are folded in toward the palm of the hand.  Ask your child to show you his/her claw fingers. The writing instrument rests in the space between the thumb and pointer finger (if it is long like a pencil) and is gripped near the point with the pointer and tall man at the top and thumb at the bottom. We practice with fun activities every day.  The children's hands are still growing and developing.  This practice will help the children to  most comfortably grip for writing in the future...now!

A Visit From The SPCA
Sharon Hauser fromt the SPCA and her adorable dog Rusty, visited our center on Friday.  The children were thrilled to meet them and to hear and see a story about Sam the Sad Dog.  Not only did they learn about what the SPCA does for pets, but they also learned how to best take care of their own.  Then, they got to pet and cuddle Rusty! Bonus!
On Monday October 1, the children will bake special treats for the cats and dogs of our local SPCA.  We continue to collect special items to deliver for the care of the pets there as well.  Thank you for your donations.

More fun in learning last week.....

Let's build a pathway to learning! Collaboration, Communication, and Fun!
Nature + Plastic Toys + Imagination = Fun!
Learning about letter formation and putting sounds together to make words...with scented playdough. Sweet spelling!
A new sensory experience with shaving cream and foam shapes
Exploring sound tubes, kaleidoscopes, color paddles and glasses as part of our five senses learning. Below, the girls are building with colorful transparent legos on the light table.

This week the Junior Kindergarten children will focus on the letter Tt and learning about Pets.
We can't wait for the Pet Show on Friday at 8:30am.

Mrs. Cummings and I are really looking forward to sitting down with all of you for our first Parent/Teacher Conference on Thursday.  There is no school on that day.

Have a wonderful week!

Ee is for Ears! We Hear With Our Ears!

Ee...Ears and Sense of Hearing

The energy was electric in the Junior Kindergarten building last week!  The children enthusiastically used their ears to listen for all sorts of sounds.  We started off with a BANG on Monday with a rain, wind, thunder and lightning show.  Mother Nature surely gave us a lot to listen to.  The rain came down in soft, quiet rhythms at first. Yet, as the rain poured harder the rhythm was faster and the sound got louder. The children were intrigued.  We decided to stand on our new porch and just listen to the rain. One child began clapping along to the rhythm....where was my camera when I needed it???  Soon the whole class was clapping along...and wouldn't you know, it got faster and louder! So, the clapping grew faster and louder.  Soon there was laughter mixed in!  It might have been raining, but the Sunny Sea Friends made it a bright and happy day.
Let's get the rhythm of the hands! Work those fine motor muscles to roll dough into lines for letters. The children reinforce the learning of letter shapes L, F, and E.

Time to print! Let's make an E! Always start our letters at the top! Big line down....frog jump back to the top....little line over.....frog jump to the middle.....little line over......frog jump to the bottom.....little line over!

Listening to and enjoying music is a wonderful way to  celebrate the sense of hearing.  The family projects of creating original musical instruments from recyclables turned out to be a great cause for celebration.  The children were so eager to share and play their instruments for and with one another.  They tapped, strummed, picked, bonged, and blew their way into making beautiful sounds of music. Thank you for helping to make such a senseriffic day of fun!

All About Me And My Body!
As the children learn about themselves and their five senses, they are also learning to name their basic body parts.  We enjoy incorporating Spanish into our daily routine as well.  The children have been learning to sing and say their basic body parts in both English and Spanish.  Here they are singing the popular song "Head & Shoulders, Knees & Toes".

Head....cabeza

shoulders......hombros

knees.....rodillas

toes......dedos

eyes......ojos

ears......orejas

mouth.......boca

nose.....nariz

So much fun in learning!

Last week, the children continued to tenderly take care of their vegetable garden.  It is thriving! On Friday, after studying, touching, smelling and tasting the herbs, they planted them in the garden as well.

The inspiring garden art with the sayings Live, Laugh and Love were thoughtfully donated to us by Tre and his family.  Thank you!

This week the children will focus on the letter Hh and their senses of smell and taste.  We have a lot of senseriffic activities planned! Join us one day if you can!

Other fun activities from last week.....

painting on tin foil with a mixture of paint and dish soap

experimenting with shaving cream, sand, and natural objects

using various objects for painting with texture

Just LISTEN to the fun of dancing on bubble wrap!

Every week, the children experience so many different things in their learning stations, outside, during Circle Time, at lunch, EVERYWHERE! I wish it was possible to include them all in the blog.  Still, the blog is a great tool for starting conversations.  Share it with your child and encourage him/her to tell you more.  Happy reading!
Have a wonderful week!

Fun With Fishes, Frogs and Sense of Sight!

Ff

Our letter focus for last week was the fabulous, fantastic, friendly letter Ff.

The children started the week of activities in 5 senses, fine motor style!  Using glue, they traced the upper and lower case letter Ff on paper.  Then, using their fingers, the children sprinkled flour over the glue.  It was  "senseriffic" alphabet learning fun!

During one of our daily assemblies the children learned the song "Five Fast Fishes":

Five Fast Fishes swimming down the river
Five fast fishes swimming down the stream
Swimming past five floating logs
Swimming past five croaking frogs
Floating logs
Croaking frogs
Floating logs
Croaking frogs
Five Fast Fishes...Yeah!

After singing the song the children pretended to be frogs and fishes, and even learned some fish and frog Yoga moves.

A tasty froggie snack for Fun Friday!

From tadpole to frog!  The children have been observing this metamorphosis enthusiastically since collecting tadpole eggs from the rain water canals outside the center.  We collected the eggs on Friday and by Monday we had a tank full of baby tadpoles.  Each day last week the children marveled at how much bigger the babies were than the day before.  They are growing fast!  Soon we will see back legs.

A sequencing exercise.  The children cut out and added pictures of the  tadpole to frog process in order, to their very own book.

Learning about our sense of sight has been an eyeopening experience!  The children experimented with color and color mixing last week. They enjoyed using wooden blocks with colorful centers, exploring the light table with color paddles, building materials made from colorful plastic shapes, and exploring things from around the center with "The Magic Eye", a super moveable magnifying device! Using their senses of touch and sight the children finger painted and mixed colors on the tables to make prints and other beautiful artwork.  Using kaleidoscopes as their muse they drew colorful pictures of what was inside those interesting little tubes.  The children also learned about how Doctors test their eyesight using a chart.  They thought it was pretty cool to cover one eye and try to read the letters and numbers from a distance as they went from "huge" to "tiny", top to bottom.

Tactilio is a "senseriffic" game that teaches the children to look at an object and then try to feel for that same object inside a mystery bag. They continue to take turns until someone fills their card with all of the like items in front of them.

We had a great time riding Gus the Bus on our first field trip of the year, Wednesday. Play time and laughter at  Crisp Park was a great way to kick off a fantastic year of fun field trips in Junior Kindergarten.  We enjoyed the company of several parents.  No need to fear if you weren't able to join us this time, however.  There will be many more opportunities.  We'd love for you to come along on at least one field trip this year.  We'll try to give you plenty of notice so you can plan.

Hot and sweaty. A bit tired and cranky too. But, mostly happy after a lot of active play at the park.

In the Shorecrest spirit of community, we were so excited to welcome four middle division friends to share part of our day on Thursday.
They will join us a couple times each month to play, dance, sing, and learn right along with us.

Some other fun in learning this week included building gross motor, logic and reasoning, and communication skills!  Using gutters, ramps and balls, tires, and more in play helps children to think, discuss, plan, lift, move, and work together to make things happen.  Here is just some of what we were able to observe:

We are truly having a wonderful time getting to know the children in Junior Kindergarten this year.  They are all unique, special individuals.  We ended the week with each child using both natural and art/craft materials to construct a self portrait.  As you will soon see, the product of each turned out to be nearly as unique and special as the individual who created it.

Other fun in learning last week:
Pizza Kitchen!!!  The children were perfectly pleased with the new addition to the Exploratorium last week.  A pizza kitchen. As they learn about vegetables and herbs and how they can be used for many food, medicinal and household purposes, the children will experiment with different fun activities to do so.  Last week's pizza kitchen featured tasty herbs that go into making pizza and other Italian dishes, pizza making materials, an ordering window, menus, a restaurant table and opportunities to try out many pizza making hats.  Take a look!

It was a great week!

Tune in next week for a recap of the letter Ee and sense of hearing.
Enjoy Crisp Park pictures on the slideshow at the top of the blog.

I hope all your days are SUNNY!
See you soon.
